Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages people to reduce waste and make more sustainable choices.

In Australia, around 2.7 million single-use coffee cups are thrown away every day, adding up to more than 985 million each year. Because these cups are lined with plastic, they can’t be recycled through your household bins, so they often end up in landfill.

Choosing a reusable coffee cup is a simple way to make a difference – but it’s not the only one. That’s why this year, we’re expanding the focus beyond just avoiding single-use plastics in Shellharbour. Instead, it’s about reusing, repairing, and getting more life out of the things you already own – helping reduce waste and keep valuable materials out of landfill.

Small Swaps Can Make a Big Impact

Your coffee really does taste better in a reusable mug. By choosing to reuse, you can help keep hundreds of disposable cups out of landfill each year.

But it doesn’t have to stop there.

This Plastic Free July, we’re also encouraging the community to:

  • Choose reusable over single-use wherever possible,
  • Repair items instead of throwing them away,
  • Get creative with reuse by giving old items a new purpose, and
  • Avoid waste to landfill by making more mindful choices.

Get Involved Locally

Want to join in but don’t know where to start? We’re hosting a range of reuse and repair-focused activities across Shellharbour:

These sessions are a great way to not only learn new skills and get creative, but also extend the life of your belongings – while also having a bit of fun along the way.

Make a difference this Plastic Free July

Every item we reuse or repair is one less item sent to landfill. By making small, simple changes, we can:

  • Reduce waste to landfill
  • Save resources and energy
  • Create a cleaner, more sustainable community

So get involved, make a pledge, and challenge yourself to rethink what you’re throwing away!
