Soft Plastics Recycling Returns to Shellharbour!
Hey Shellharbour – we’re back with another Soft Plastics Recycling Drop-Off Event, and we can’t wait to see you there!
We’ve heard your feedback and know how important soft plastics recycling is to our community. That’s why we’ve been working alongside the Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation (ISJO) to bring you another opportunity to recycle those tricky items that can’t go in your kerbside recycling bin.
📅 Sunday 14th September 2025
⏰ 8:00am – 12:00pm
📍 Albion Oval Car Park, Ash Avenue, Albion Park Rail
What Are Soft Plastics?
Soft plastics are flexible plastic materials that can be scrunched into a ball. Unlike hard plastics, they don’t hold their shape. These items often end up in your kerbside red bins, but they can be recycled when collected separately and processed correctly.
We’re asking residents to bring empty, clean, and dry soft plastics, including:
- Plastic bags (clear and coloured)
- Biscuit and snack wrappers
- Chip packets and silver-lined snack wrappers
- Fresh and frozen food wrappers/bags
- Pasta, bread, and rice bags (plastic and woven types)
- Cling wrap, bubble wrap, and snap lock zip bags
- Document sleeves, mail satchels, and carrier bags
- Cereal liners and plastic pet food bags
Why It Matters
Soft plastics make up around 7% by mass of red-lid bin contents, according to our most recent residential kerbside bin audit. But due to their low density, they take up a lot more space, contributing significantly to landfill volume.
By recycling soft plastics, we’re not just reducing waste – we’re helping turn it into new products and keeping valuable materials out of landfill.
Let’s work together to make Shellharbour more sustainable. Every wrapper, bag, and packet make a difference!
