Shellharbour City Council is proud to support the Plastic Free July Movement this year. Many common single-use plastics such as single-use coffee cups and cling wrap are largely non-recyclable, which means they tend to end up in our landfills.
Instead, we’d like to invite the community to consider making the switch to reusables and ditch the single-use plastics. After all, it could end up saving the planet and your wallet!
Switching to reusables doesn’t have to be expensive or daunting. It can be as simple as:
- Bringing a reusable coffee cup or mug to work
- Keeping a water bottle in your bag or on your desk
- Ditching the cling wrap and using reusable food containers
- Doing what’s simple and sustainable for you and your family!
Making the switch to reusable options means you’re also saving money on your weekly shop – no need to buy cling wrap or bottled water when you’ve already got it covered!

Unnecessary plastic items, such as single-use coffee cups, can have a significant impact on our environment and wildlife. Not only do they occupy space in landfills, but their plastic lids are also commonly littered. This litter often ends up on our beaches and in waterways, where it can harm natural habitats and endanger wildlife.
In Australia, over 60,000 kilograms of single-use coffee cups are sent to landfill each year. By making simple, sustainable choices – like bringing a reusable cup or mug to work – we can help reduce this number. Not only does this save space in our landfills, but it also keeps your coffee warmer for longer!
